Archery Class Training: SCORE
At the Canton range
Outside DISTANCES  are determined by rank student is working for. Know the rank you need.
15 meters is shortest rank earning distance using 122 cm faces for JOAD youth  (ages 9-20 yrs)
30 Meters is shortest rank earning distance using 80 cm face for SOAD adult (ages 18 and up) .
Indoor distances are either 9 or 18 meters, with either a 60 or 40 cm face.
New students, adult or youth, may use larger targets and closer distances as they are learning.

Each month, on the third weekend we score. As we were closed July 5 & 6, this is our third weekend.
New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer.
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • If earning pins: must be a USA Archery Youth, Adult or Family member & Learn Archery member- print USA Archery membership card
  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday and 3:30 on Sunday,  Arrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be geared up and on the line at 10:30 (or 3:30 Sunday) at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows, however student may not finish in time allotted.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD using program arrows will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank , and will not end with a completed card.
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not  end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.) New students will group together with one of the coaches for the basics and small group training.

Class may run longer during scoring sessions if earning rank/pins.
Students need to pre-fill  scorecards upon arrival.

Effective January 1 , 2014 per USA Archery.
As we are a USA Archery JOAD & SOAD club, any student participating in class needs minimum USA Archery “RECREATIONAL” membership ($15)
(Note: Although you can not earn rank at Recreational membership level when scoring, you can upgrade during your membership year if desired).

Saturday and Sunday training
The Georgia State Championships are scheduled for September -just a few weeks away.
Saturday/Sunday Training: importance of the wrist and its influence on back tension
The "set position" begins the motion of the back by placing the fingers on the string and cocking the wrist in such a way that the angular shot sequence aligns for the "candy cane" rotation around the body. Often students cock the wrist toward the bow arm rather than away, which starts a linear arm pull and loses the strength provided from the back muscles. The goal is to set the fingers and wrist in a position to have the upper back arm (called "lan 2") start the movement, being pulled by the back, rather than the arm. We will work with paint bucket drops to simulate this wrist position.

Tune up and evaluation
Training: "Have a Plan" Preparing for an event.
The Georgia State Championships are scheduled for September -just a few weeks away.
For students that plan to attend a tournament, remember the best way to achieve progress in your shooting is to practice good form at set periods throughout the week, and increase duration and frequency. The Korean champions trained with NO bow for months, adding the bow only when the form was right. Gain form with stretch band work in front of a mirror. Get the form FIRST with stretch and string band work, planks, and core work.

Develop the endurance .The Championship is a 2 day event, shooting 36 arrows twice a day, each day(plus warm-up arrows).  If you have your own equipment, work on “holding” SPT’s(in front of the mirror also). Do only those SPTS‘s you can accomplish in perfect form. Be comfortable with 100 + arrows a day to avoid fatigue.

Start your plan from the event, and work backwards with a written schedule.

Write down goals in the process that you which to achieve. Evaluate your equipment and acquire what you need well before the event so you are familiar with it, and can make adjustments.
