Last week members of the JOAD and SOAD programs continued to score and earned rank and pins, and awards will be presented this weekend.
Outdoor State Competition was last weekend- now we start looking at what shifts can be made for the upcoming indoor tournaments.

Prepared:It’s a great time to be thinking about what you want to accomplish as an archer. Some students are new and just know they want to shoot and find out about archery, the basics and variables in equipment, and have just begun to get a feel for the programs basic equipment. More seasoned archers may have new equipment , or have been shooting for a while with their own equipment or those using program equipment are ready for their own starter equipment.

What do you see for yourself as an archer? Does a competition interest you? How does that look? What will it take to get there? Do you want to be able to shoot longer distances, or perhaps beat a score you earned previously. Maybe have better endurance while shooting, or understand your equipment better, and find ways to make it perform to its optimum ability. Perhaps find ways to draw out your own optimum ability as well. What kind of training and practice time are you able to invest to meet your goals.

Several first tournament experiences offer a place to feel the nerves, test your scoring abilities and "get your feet wet", and are an excellent training component in beginning stages as a student can attend for the understanding and experience only, leaving expectations of the "win" behind. Several indoor opportunities will be available in November, and there are still a few "900" round outdoor tournaments. Indoor State and National Championships are typically held in late January and now is a good time to look at what equipment changes might be typically made when moving indoors. Something to set GOALS for. We will shoot distances this weekend, and review what the differences are in indoor and outdoor set ups.

To participate , Please reply with the time selected, RH LH, and name in the subject line. and if adult or youth via learnarchery@yahoo.com  if you have not already done so, for equipment and staff considerations. Please arrive  early to gear up, and sign in. This one hour class allows students to gear up & continue with training basics in safety and form .Coach supervised training includes recurve bow and all safety equipment. Continuing, ongoing instruction , accommodating various skill levels, covering: refining form, understanding equipment needs, equipment purchasing options, tournament rules, timing, string alignment, concentration, back tension.

-Class fee for open sessions as posted at the Canton location is $15.00, check or cash.
-Put your sight on the bow to learn where it is set based on the distance you shoot, and check the left/ right position of the aperture.
-Wear snug fitting, layered clothing, ( must have closed toe shoes for out doors or can not shoot), tie loose hair back, and remove jewelry that may interfere with string release (usually bracelets, necklaces).

Archery Class Training: SCORE

At the Canton range
Third weekend of each month.
JOAD/SOAD: Please advise if you have an outdoor distance request, or arrive early to help set distances.

Each month, on the third weekend we score. New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer. Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:
  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday, or 3:30 Sunday. Arrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • If you are to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be on the line for the first scoring arrow at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank.
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if on time.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD will not end with a completed card as they will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank .
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not  end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.)

Archery Class Training:
Basic tuning continues; "holding reviewed"; making arrow spine adjustments.
Distance shooting Saturday, weather permitting.

Class ends at 11:30 Saturday as there is an orientation following the session, and we must  move gear and set up .

At the Canton GA range.
This week we will practice distance shooting, review arrow spine and how to make adjustments, and focus on “holding”, a perfect alignment... absolute, back muscles in place, where the archer can not be collapsed. We will continue to work towards body positioning/alignment, focusing on foot and hip positions and flat backs, for best stability.

As we explore the components of training, from goal setting, and understanding types of tournaments, fundamentals of scoring etc., we must always keep in mind the process.

Train regularly, have a goal for each session, and, keep notes. Do you have a small booklet kept in your quiver?

Please arrive early to gear up and check in.

If outside: Distance Shooting

Archery Class Training, basic tuning continues, breathing, relax.
Distance shooting Saturday, weather permitting

Satuday Class ends at 11:30 as there is an orientation following the session, and we must  move indoors and set up .

At the Canton range.
Breathing should be as consistent as the other elements of your "process". Timing is a big part of the steps you are going through. If you take a deep breath and hold it, then pull back the bow string, you will find that you are "up in your chest" and loose the flat back and center core stability. The sight will jump and beat with your heart, making aiming challenging, and you may release the string prematurely because you simply can't hold your breath anymore. Breathing should be timed to bring air in as you open the bow, and slowly let about half of it out as you come to rest at full draw anchor. Practice this at home with a string or stretch band, and whenever possible, practice in front of a mirror so you can see the results of the changes you make in your body position.

If outside: Distance Shooting
