Nationals in Snellville Feb 21-23.

Training: Relax!-Be fluid!
The elite archers step up, set their feet, and begin the "process". Watching them makes it look so effortless, but the work, mistakes, re-dos, sacrifices, do it again, again, again...all led to the appearance of "effortlessness".
Working to get the bones in alignment, muscles into familiar "hold", the mental "I am here, last arrow is gone, next has not been loaded", and the fluid movement to reach that holding, loaded back position-took practice. And the willingness to try something new.
This training session, we will work on routines, and fluid, relaxed, intentional movement, using only those muscles necessary to produce your shot. We will check our Lan 2 (a spot on the middle backside of your upper draw arm) to be aware that it moves along the shooting line and perpendicular to the arrow line, a rotation, to the back tension "holding" position, and, we will focus on the movement of the draw elbow.

As this is a scoring weekend, please note:
Reminder: Changes in USA Archery JOAD/SOAD Club rules(Learn Archery is a JOAD/SOAD Club)
USA Archery has implemented several new mandates:

JOAD/SOAD

As one of the key USA Archery National Ranking Programs, membership at the youth, adult or family level is now required to earn any rank through the JOAD/SOAD programs, effective January 1 2014.
Join online for adult, youth, or family membership level at  https://webpoint.usarchery.org/wp/Memberships/Join.wp   choose "Learn Archery" as your club affiliation
You will need a current  Learn Archery membership  with the USA Archery full membership to receive pins/lanyards.

These member students may continue participating in the JOAD/SOAD rank earning programs, register for tournaments, camps etc. and that full membership continues to provide liability insurance.

New Students, not earning rank
Class participant student needs minimum USA Archery “RECREATIONAL” membership ($15)
USA Archery requires a minimum RECREATIONAL membership ($15) to participate in JOAD club classes, mail-in tournaments, recreational camps. The introductory recreational status ensures the athlete agrees to abide by the Code of Conduct and membership guidelines, and it allows USA Archery to cover the RECREATIONAL status members  with insurance policies during their participation at the JOAD/SOAD Clubs. A RECREATIONAL membership can be upgraded later to a full membership by adding only the difference in fee should the student wish to participate in JOAD/SOAD rank earning programs, tournaments, etc.
Join online for recreational, or adult, youth, family full membership level at  https://webpoint.usarchery.org/wp/Memberships/Join.wp   choose "Learn Archery" as your club affiliation.
(You can not earn rank at Recreational membership level when scoring, but can upgrade during your membership year if desired).

NOTE:
Next tournaments will be held in Snellville Feb 21-23.

Archery Class Training: SCORE
At the Canton range
Third weekend of each month.
INSIDE DISTANCES ARE 18 METERS, OR 9 METERS FOR certain YOUTH.

Class may run longer during scoring sessions if earning rank.
Students need to pre-fill  scorecards upon arrival.

Score ranks have a new matrix issued by USA Archery! I will have that available at class.  New scores are now available for barebow shooters.
Here are links also:

Each month, on the third weekend we score. New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer.
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday and 3:30 on SundayArrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be geared up and on the line at 10:30 (or 3:30 Sunday) at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows, and may not finish in time allotted.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD using program arrows will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank and will not end with a completed card.
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not  end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.)

"See Your Shot"
Last week we put a focus on goal setting strategies –what you put in, you get out, and understanding that writing down your goals gives you a power over the process. We worked with each student to focus on ONE thing during practice.
This week we will focus on the positions of the draw and bow hands, and blend more of the previous mental focus training.

We often say: “See your Shot”, meaning bring your draw hand up so that it is in front of your face about nose height, draw-hand in line with the sight to the target, and you will “see” your shot…see the hand that is holding the string.  This sets your alignment into an angular rather than linier motion, allowing your draw rotation to take place more easily, and the back to load, as the bow arm is slightly off to the left (for right handed shooters).

“See your  Shot” can also mean that you do not blink. An article reviewed greater successes in archery with a simple awareness of not blinking, and maintaining eye focus for the few seconds of draw /load /anchor/transfer/ hold/ aim/ release/ follow-through.
As we have practiced in recent training, the mental portion of “See your Shot”, means to visualize the entire shot sequence in your mind with eyes closed, by removing yourself from the line, and mime the entire shot sequence, with eyes closed, no equipment, going through perfect form, seeing your shot, all arrows landing in the gold.

We will work on these training techniques this week, and have information available for those wishing to attend the JOAD Nationals,  and or Nationals in February. Deadline is Feb 3 for no late fees.

Please check-your division may have changed due to an upcoming birthday!
Divisions are based on the year in which your age changes-
for example- if you turn 15 sometime this year, you are a Cadet, no longer a cub.
You can always choose a more demanding higher division. ( example Cadet can shoot adult/senior)

Happy New Year!
Training: New strategies for the year.
"A goal without a plan is just a wish"
Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900 - 1944)

Training: Goals
As it is a new year it’s a great time to be thinking about what you want to accomplish as an archer. Some students are new and just know they want to shoot and find out about archery, the basics and variables in equipment, and have just begun to get a feel for the programs basic equipment.
More seasoned archers may have new equipment after the holidays, or have been shooting for a while with their own equipment or program equipment, and want to learn to “tune” their equipment, and refine specifics in their form..

In either setting, or any endeavor for that matter, if you can step into the future and look back at where you are today, you can set up a guide to get to that “future self”.

What do you see for yourself as an archer? Does a competition interest you? How does that look? What will it take to get there? Do you want to be able to shoot longer distances, or perhaps beat a score you earned previously.  Maybe have better endurance while shooting, or understand your equipment better, and find ways to make it perform to its optimum ability. Perhaps find ways to draw out your own optimum ability as well. What kind of training and practice time are you able to invest in your “future self”?

This class will focus on goal setting strategies –what you put in, you get out.
