Each month, on the third weekend we score. New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer. Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday and 3:30 on SundayArrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be geared up and on the line at 10:30 (or 3:30 Sunday) at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows, and may not finish in time allotted.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD using program arrows will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank and will not end with a completed card.
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not  end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.)

To participate , Please reply with the time selected, RH LH, and name in the subject line. and if adult or youth via learnarchery@yahoo.com  if you have not already done so, for equipment and staff considerations. Please arrive  early to gear up, and sign in. Begin to know your distances and target face size by putting them on the appropriate target. This one hour class allows students to gear up & continue with training basics in safety and form .Coach supervised training includes recurve bow and all safety equipment. Continuing, ongoing instruction , accommodating various skill levels, covering: refining form, understanding equipment needs, equipment purchasing options, tournament rules, timing, string alignment, concentration, back tension

Dec 14/15: Quadrant Training, Patterns

Parents, please share this info with your students!!

Saturday & Sunday Dec 14/15, Canton GA range
INSIDE

Saturday: Please arrive no later than 10:15 to gear up and check in
Sunday: Please arrive no later than 3:15 to gear up and check in. Store closes at 5, and we must be packed up and out!

NOTE:
We had several students attend the FITA tournament is in Conyers last weekend, and all placed well in the competition!
Next tournaments will be held in Snellville Feb 21-23.
This Saturday ,Dec  14, is also an "Orientation" Training day. We will be ending class promptly at 11:30 to set up.

Last week we worked on several mental imagery training techniques , mimetic training, and focus training. If you can visualize your "perfect" shot, and shot sequence, your game will improve, your nerves will settle, and your timing will be more consistent.
You should be able to close your eyes, and visualize that perfect shot, and reach a level that the imagery is so ingrained that you are able to be in a busy environment (grocery store, etc) turn your head toward your imaginary target, and while keeping your arms and body still, mentally go through your shot sequence, performing the steps and seeing the arrow hit the gold.
Often the equipment and nerves  issues can be mastered with a break and mental imagery tuning before returning to the shooting line.

TRAINING: Quadrant Training
To aid your mental imagery, we can identify ways to tune the form up by seeing the arrow patterns on blank targets with blue tape that sections the target.

Patterns Quadrant training:
After warming up with a few rounds to get sighted in, we will remove target faces, and work on specific training with "blue tape".

Where are your arrows landing? What quadrant? As you shoot , focus on process, and you will see the patterns of arrows and how they reveal what to adjust in equipment or form. I will have sheets for you to record patterns over a few ends.

Eqpt Training Tip:
Numbering arrows, shooting them in order. Use of this process gives indications as to arrow errors, or form errors, and shows up in the patterns. Easier with your own set of arrows because you begin to notice groups forming within the dozen arrows you shoot, but  effective with the program arrows. Shoot 1,2,3,4,5,6 then 6,5,4,3,2,1
Example: If #6 is always out no matter which sequence you shoot, it is not you.
Arrow nocks can be off just a hair and cause variations.
If the last arrow shot is always out-you may be showing fatigue.

To participate , Please reply with the time selected, RH LH, and name in the subject line. and if adult or youth via learnarchery@yahoo.com  if you have not already done so, for equipment and staff considerations. Please arrive  early to gear up, and sign in. Continuing, ongoing instruction , accommodating various skill levels, covering: refining form, understanding equipment needs, equipment purchasing options, tournament rules, timing, string alignment, concentration, back tension.

-Class fee for open sessions as posted at the Canton location is $15.00, check or cash.
-Put your sight on the bow to learn where it is set based on the distance you shoot, and check the left/ right position of the aperture.
-Wear snug fitting, layered clothing, ( must have closed toe shoes for out doors or can not shoot), tie loose hair back, and remove jewelry that may interfere with string release (usually bracelets, necklaces).

Hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving!!!

Last week we had quite a few that planned to be here Saturday, and only a few on Sunday.

Next weekend (Dec 7) is also an "Orientation" Weekend.

Great  work at the balloon shoot & Games last weekend!! Excellent shooting!!

TRAINING: Tuning the "Process", ways to trainStaying in the "process" is the key to getting better performance results. We have the "Balloon games, Nock Out games, Scoring weekends, and our Hot Soda rounds at the end of class, as a reminder of that concept. If your thoughts are on "gotta get the gold" and not on the process ( feet, breath, hips, set, set up, draw, load, anchor, transfer, hold ,etc) you weaken your results. We will review "the process" steps this weekend.

Tuning practice such as blank bale to FEEL the specific process element, and quadrant training to see the  arrow patterns created by your form, provides  essential feedback for an archer to make adjustments.

Those wishing to score for rank may do so as well, if a partner can be found.
Scoring practice for tournament prep is also available.

November 23, 24, 2013

Balloon Shoot & Nock Out Games!

Rain & Cold Predicted this weekend -INDOOR training
Saturday: 10:30 a.m. indoors

Sunday,  3:30--indoors

Balloon Shoot &" Nock-out" games!

Last week members of the JOAD and SOAD programs scored and earned rank and pins, and awards will be presented this class.

This week, we will have the balloon shoot game along with the "knock-out" game. Everyone, please stretch out, get your gear set up, and select 1 balloon to blow up and put in the big bag with your symbol or initial.
We will have a few warm up rounds of "knock-out" and start the games.

Nock-Out:

Strategy and skill as a warm up game...3 arrows.

First round: red and better scored arrows are kept to shoot for the next round.

Next round "8" and better scored arrows are kept (arrows are getting down to one or two in a quiver ,and usually only one or two competitors are still standing.)

Down to Gold!!!(with what's left in your quiver)
(those Nocked-out, may begin practice for the balloon games, or scoring)

Balloon Shoot:
The idea is shoot YOUR balloon first, before your competitor pops theirs.
Once you have shot yours,  you shoot for theirs.

If you shoot theirs first accidentally-they win and they move to the next round . You are out a round,  but can restart shooting with others independent of the 1st game, to create an underlying game.

Strategy is important.
Timing is important.

This is a training game for handling nerves, and gaining focus. Use the skills we've trained for in these games!!

Please arrive a few minutes early to gear up and check in.
To participate ,
Please reply with the day and time selected in the subject line. and your name, right or left handed, and if adult or youth via learnarchery@yahoo.com if you have not already done so, so we have enough equipment and staff available

Nov 9 & 10 TRAINING: Tuning Arrows; Focus on the Process

Parents, please share this info with your students!!
Please see info on bottom of post about the  25meter FITA indoor competitions.

Saturday Nov 9 & Sunday Nov 10
Weather predictions cold Saturday, so dress in layers as we may be outside if clear, or inside if too cold. Check around back to see if we are set up outside.

Saturday: Please arrive no later than 10:15 to gear up and check in
Sunday: Please arrive no later than 3:15 to gear up and check in

NOTE:
The next tournaments are at 25meters with 60 cm faces, and if outside, we will have a few of those set up, for those interested. Also 18 meter set ups for those tuning up for indoor championships.

TRAINING: Tuning arrows; Following the "Process"
You often hear us talk about how stay in the "process" is the key to meeting your goals. We have the Hot Soda rounds at the end of class, as a reminder of that concept. If your thoughts are on "gotta get the gold" and not on the process ( feet, breath, hips, set, set up, draw, load, etc) you weaken your results. We will review "the process" steps this weekend.

Tuning Arrows.
Did you know that your perfectly tuned arrows will become stiffer by adding cresting? Or your too weak arrows, which can't be cut to make them stiffer, can be made stiffer by adding long feathers?
Many details can change an arrow result to weaker or stiffer besides cutting to make it stiffer,  or adding heavier point weight to make it weaker.
Changing brace height, adding an extra nock locator on the string, changing to a tie-on nock, adding feathers-many things can help you (or challenge you) in tuning up your groups.

Please note: Class will end promptly at 11:30 as we have an orientation which starts immediately after the class (Orientations always first and second Saturdays)

Continuing, ongoing instruction , accommodating various skill levels, covering: refining form, understanding equipment needs, equipment purchasing options, tournament rules, timing, string alignment, concentration, back tension.

-Class fee for open sessions as posted at the Canton location is $15.00, check or cash.

Please check-your division may have changed due to an upcoming birthday!
