Saturday & Sunday March 22 & 23, 2014 Canton GA range

Archery Class Training: "Write it down + quadrant training"
Last week we scored, and this weekend students will receive their pins/lanyards earned (must be full JOAD member to earn rank)
At the Canton range
Quadrant training:
I will provide quadrant training sheets this session which allow students to see very clearly the patterns of the arrows on the targets by tracking them on these sheets

Write it Down

Training in archery focuses on form. Each step in your routine should take the same amount of time, each and every time, to get the best accuracy. Consistency is about repeatability. The entire shooting process should take about 10 seconds, with about 3 seconds to aim. Variations on that, results in variations at the target.

The best way to settle into a routine is to write it down, and note your specific variations for your routine. (example: I must always close my left eye, and turn my draw arm elbow out, and I put those elements into an auto-pilot sequence). As you add in new skills, old ones become sub-conscious elements. It is crucial that you add-in a specific element, work on mastering it, then add another. If you build on top of elements that don’t support your goals, you will be building sub-conscious elements that will be difficult to unlearn.

Be willing to expand and add new techniques. Poor form shows up as we move to longer distances, and really shows up during a long set of shooting. Yes, we all step up, shoot, and repeat, but have something specific to work on.

Typical steps useful as an outline in various styles- compound, recurve, barebow. (note: aim is far down the list!) Add your personal variations!

1.Stance & posture
2.Nock
3.Set : hook string & place bowhand
4.Set-up
5.Draw/load
6.Anchor
7. Load & transfer then hold
8.Aim & expand
9.Release
10.Follow Through

Sunday: Please arrive  early  to gear up and check in.(no later than 3:15) First scoring arrow is at 3:30. Store closes at 5, and we must be packed up and out!

Archery Class Training: SCORE
At the Canton range
Third weekend of each month.
INSIDE DISTANCES ARE 18 METERS, OR 9 METERS FOR certain YOUTH.

Each month, on the third weekend we score. New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer.
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • Earning pins: must be a USA Archery Youth, Adult or Family member & Learn Archery member- print membership card
  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday and 3:30 on SundayArrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be geared up and on the line at 10:30 (or 3:30 Sunday) at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows, and may not finish in time allotted.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD using program arrows will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank and will not end with a completed card.
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not  end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.)

Class may run longer during scoring sessions if earning rank/pins.
Students need to pre-fill  scorecards upon arrival.

March 8,9: Outdoor transition

"Outdoor transition" reviewed.
March 8th & 9th
At the Canton range, Saturday-Indoors/  Sunday may be outdoors-check around back

Classes start:
Saturday: 10:30 A.M.  Saturday: Please arrive early to gear up & check in ( no later than 10:15 ).
Class ends at
11:30 as we have an orientation following the class

Sunday,  3:30 PM Please arrive  early  to gear up and check in.(no later than 3:15)Store closes at 5, and we must be packed up and out

Tune up! Outdoor Equipment!
(Sunday: check around back-we may be outside!) Bring portable chairs!

Most of the tournaments now shift to outdoors. What does that mean for equipment?
Could mean quite a lot, particularly if you are going for a 70 or 90 meter distance. Arrows and draw weight of the limbs on a recurve typically change if competing outdoors. There is no real need for heavy draw weight on limbs indoors as the distance is only 18 meters to 20 yards and there are no weather elements to battle. Indoors, a “fat” arrow is preferred , often called line-cutters, meaning they are fatter so they can break the line of the next higher scoring ring, versus a skinny arrow that, if landing in the same hole, could be one point less. Indoor arrows with three or four  4” feathers add stability and correction-no wind or rain to beat the arrows around indoors.

Outdoors the skinny carbons and spin wing vanes can provide less wind interference and better long distance flight, and when coupled  with heavier limbs, can make a big difference in getting to the further distances. Some champion Archers keep their set up the same indoors or out - good results are good results! When changing weight of limbs or changing arrows for outdoors, several factors can be considered in the set-up including arrow rest, plunger, spine of the arrow, arrow nock type, vanes, string strands, etc. Saturday and Sunday, we will do some bare shaft testing and review a set up change, and practice the “set to set-up” keeping the draw elbow inside the arrow line, and continue the focus on that elbows movement at release. We will also revisit the draw length check for those interested.

Please arrive a few minutes early to gear up and check in.
To participate , Please reply with the day and time selected in the subject line. and your name, right or left handed, and if adult or youth via learnarchery@yahoo.com if you have not already done so, so we have enough equipment and staff available
