This weekend, we will  continue  to shoot distances when outside, while working with students to help them find that balance in release for each hand - from "hold" to release with string hand, and "sit" motion for the bow hand.(see the 1000 arrow video for examples)

Archery Class Training: SCORE

At the Canton range
Third weekend of each month.
JOAD/SOAD: Please advise if you have an outdoor distance request, or arrive early to help set distances.

Each month, on the third weekend we score. New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer. Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:
  • Please arrive early to gear up, check in, obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday, or 3:30 Sunday. Arrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • If you are to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be on the line for the first scoring arrow at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank.
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if on time.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD will not complete a card as they will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank .
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not be able to complete a score card, for time considerations.)

   Archery Class Training : Process

Over the last  weeks we have worked on how to train form and endurance , cycles in training, and training with variation, including blank bale. We have reviewed how to get the max out of your equipment  through walk back tuning, tips on how to evaluate vane clearance, and bare shaft tuning, how important Brace Height is, and stretch band training at home. This week we will work on putting it together,  focusing on "the process" and checking "steps" . We can  help students work on reviewing any of the components from earlier training.

 Archery Class Training:

Equipment assessment - tune in tips, evaluate your equipment and learn how to make adjustments.
Basic FORM training techniques-  tune up and training with no equipment

Last week we discussed the importance of form and endurance training, recognizing cycles in training, and how training with variation, blank bale, and rest days, in a "micro cycle" of 10 days can help you improve your game.
Blank bale is useful because your eyes remain closed, and your focus is only on ONE training component. Your focus is removed from the result of the arrows patterns. Other training, stretch band and string band work on off days, along with SPTs can help with focus on form, not results on paper.
A big consideration is also equipment tuning. If you have not checked your brace height, strings, nocks, arrows, alignment, etc., before shooting, that errant arrow may not be form related, but equipment related. We will review several ways to check equipment, some basics for beginners, and more involved methods for intermediate and advanced archers. If you have your own equipment, and have more than 7 arrows bring at least one arrow that has been stripped of it's fletches (a bare shaft).*

*Youth-please have parents assist in removing fletches
