Remember: Breathe!

Removing the “hollow back”/ arched back.

Stance & POSTURE, the first steps in the NTS training combine with Breathing .
We start the “Posture” with hips tucked under/rotated up, dropping the chest down, then settling the weight down into the hips. This is the initial position before the “barrel of the gun” position which is at set-up, with both shoulders remaining down, and draw hand is about cheek height. Breathing should be as consistent as the other elements of your "process". Timing is a big part of the steps you are going through. If you start by taking a deep breath and holding it, then pull back the bow string, you will find that you are "up in your chest" and lose the flat back and center core stability. Breathing should be timed to bring air in as you open the bow, and slowly let about half of it out as you come to rest at full draw anchor.

We will work on breathing and dropping shoulders down, tucking hips up, for nice flat backs.

Archery Class Training Details: SCORE
BASICS:
Indoor distances are either 9 or 18 meters, with either a 60 or 40 cm face.
New students, adult or youth, will be assigned 9 meter distances as this class is designed to offer the fundamentals of scoring, while providing continued training to enable students to progress to further distances.

Each month, on the third weekend we score.
Learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points, and learn how to keep score.
If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at a Tournament event more comfortable .
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at time slot of session. Arrive early  to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 arrows for indoors, students must be geared up and on the line at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows each end which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Earning pins? must be both a USA Archery Youth, Adult or Family member & Learn Archery JOAD or SOAD member- print USA Archery membership card
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows each end. ( student may not finish in time allotted if using only 3 arrows).
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot 3 arrows per end (will not end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.) Adults not scoring at their appropriate distance of 18 meters with correct 40 cm size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD and using program arrows will use 3 arrows each end for time considerations for those earning rank , and may not end with a completed card.

March 14 & 15: "Gotta Connect"; String hand to jaw. Review brace height importance.

March 14 & 15 :“gotta connect”Last week we worked with removing the slings on the bow hand for proper bow release.
This weekend, we will focus on the connection at the jaw with our string hand, which helps rotate the elbow further back, and we will review how to maintain that loose grip on the bow from last week.

Equipment:
We will review “brace height” on the bow string and its importance.

String hand Correct position: solid anchor-no space between hand and jaw line. Pinky touches neck.

 .
(courtesy KSL International)

Common errors:

Opening - does not "lock" along jaw. Relies on index knuckle. Can't get elbow around behind the arrow line.

Archery, Marietta Range: bowhand release training :"Sit Dog", + make a sling. Saturday & Sunday, March 7 & 8

Focusing training on the details and  inconsistencies in form reduces variations on the target faces. Last week we worked on “set to set-up”, and stretch band training, along with fine tune focus on the targets.

Training:"Sit Dog"
This weeks Training: "sit dog!!" will focus on Bow-hand release training using a bow.We started basic training with “halt dog” to get the proper “v” in our bow hand position. Depending on the type of bow and style you shoot, gripping of the bow and dropping the bow arm creates errors at the last moment of the shot, and the idea is to shoot the bow and arrow at the same time…so the hand holding the bow must be relaxed, but purposeful ,so the sling can do its job as the bow seemingly “jumps” from the hand toward the target and rotates as the sling catches it.
From the wrist: “sit dog!” a snap at the wrist, with the sling doing the work to catch the bow. Bow arm stays STEADY.

Make your own sling
Students may bring a shoelace-wide , long (can be colorful or with a pattern if you like) to learn to make their own bow slings, sized to fit their own hand.
We will work using bows and removing the slings while coaches "catch" the bow upon the archers release.

You Tube video of how to make a sling:
http://www.learnarchery.com/ArcheryEquipmentSelection.html
 .

Only the wrist snaps downward, with slight tension in the open thumb of the bow hand...bow arm stays steady-does NOT drop.
