Marietta Range. "Chunk Training: Set to Set-up" & 3 spot practice; "Outdoor Equipment selection " Saturday 10:30 & Sunday 3:30-limited slots

We had a great weekend of classes at the Marietta range last week. Working with pressure on draw fingers and climbing the target's blue tape lines was a great "reveal" for consistency, evidenced by the results on the target.

Chunk Training: practice
the “set to set-up”

We will continue to focus on the details that create the variances at farther targets as we prep for outdoor distances. The inconsistencies really show up at the further distances.( A slightly open set of teeth can mean a whole rings worth of difference at 70 meters! Movement in the finger pressure-higher arrows (or lower). Getting the set, to set up, to draw/load with solid back "holding" =endurance and straighter arrow launch. We will  practice the “set to set-up”, observing the amount of space in the "open" position at set up,keeping the draw elbow inside the arrow line, and focus on that elbows movement at release.

Last part of class: Equipment review for outdoor Versus Indoor
Most of the future tournaments will shift to outdoors. What does that mean for equipment? Could mean quite a lot, particularly if you are going for a 70 meter distance. Arrows and draw weight of the limbs on a recurve typically change if competing outdoors. There is no real need for heavy draw weight on limbs indoors as the distance is only 18 meters to 20 yards and there are no weather elements to battle. Indoors, a “fat” arrow is preferred ,often called line-cutters, meaning they are fatter so they can break the line of the next higher scoring ring, versus a skinny arrow that, if landing in the same hole, could be one point less. Indoor arrows with three or four  4” feathers add stability and correction-no wind or rain to beat the arrows around indoors. Outdoors the skinny carbons and spin wing vanes can provide less wind interference and better long distance flight, and when coupled  with heavier limbs, can make a big difference in getting to the further distances. Some champion Archers keep their set up the same indoors or out - good results are good results!
When changing weight of limbs or changing arrows for outdoors, several factors can be considered in the set-up including arrow rest, plunger, spine of the arrow, arrow nock type, vanes, string strands, etc. We will review several options toward the end of each days class, so class may run over.

Feb 21, 22: Marietta Range: Chunk Training, Equipment Training

Thanks to everyone that came out to the Marietta location range last week for some fun and training with "Cupids Arrow"! We also held an advanced training session group with a focus on the back draw elbow. This was the first session at this location! We got into the new space on the heels of the previous tenant moving out, and tested how the space works in various set ups with the classes. Last week we stayed warm with space heaters- this week the heat is on -nice and warm (Yay!)

Tournament results:

We got some feed back from the State JOAD results with Jenna Biggins taking Bronze, Alex Goetomo Silver, and in the State Tourney: Alex Goetomo took Gold, Connie Morris took Bronze,
Congratulations!

Split group training
This weeks "Chunk training" focus will train one group closer to the target line, which allows the class to split and take the other group back to an equipment training area, then rotate the two.

We will begin providing equipment training sessions with this session being the first component.
If more than 16 enroll in the class doodle, we may open a new class option slot

Equipment training: Setting a nock onto the string. one or two nocks? How does that affect arrow spine?

As the indoor championships wind down (This weekend is the Nationals) focus shifts toward outdoor training. The distances outdoors mean the variables show up more on the target face, therefor timing and consistent form becomes even more significant. Chunk training is the process of segmenting steps and parts of the training process into manageable “chunks” and training them until they are acquired. Dancers, Karate students, musicians, football players (most sports really), practice components of the final product. Scales are well known as a fundamental in piano playing for example. Get the basics down, add on, and create the masterpiece. Students accumulate these parts, then engage in the completed activity.
This week we will be working on 2 separate drills and skill sets-foot position and draw hand fingers  position, at closer distances to see the evidence on the targets as we begin training techniques to get ready for outdoor tournament play.

Cupids Arrow
Several tournaments are coming up this month, and training focus needs to be on tightening up ,and not making any big changes in either equipment or form just before a competition.
This week we will have some fun, and check our steady precision.(If you are attending a tournament, or wish to use a target face and practice, we will make that available in the Saturday 12:30 - 1:30 session and Sunday 1:30-3:30 slots for those with their own bows.)
As Valentines day is Saturday, we will have some fun with our training. Our targets will include hearts, and the training will focus on using the strength from back muscles, steady, long, solid arm positions, with techniques to feel those muscles better so we can “engage” them.
Where the hearts intersect, will be the high score region.

Parents, please share the class plan info with your students!!
