Class Plans:
November 1st and 2nd: Eye focus-what are you aiming at?
Seems so simple, doesn’t it? Just aim at the gold and release!
Then why don’t all the arrows land in that sweet spot in the center?
Yes there are many factors in form that need to be addressed, but learning the technique for aiming can add improved results. The goal is to hit the target…so, be sure you are aiming at a very specific point on the target-not the aperture, not toward a target area, but a very specific point. Aiming is not done until the archer reaches “hold”. Aiming before that, produces inconsistent results. Aiming requires just a few seconds- but does require the few seconds, and we teach the basic 1,2,3 timing from the beginning.
Look around at trees, flags, items moved by wind. Feel the wind on your skin at “set”. The decision to aim at the x, or slightly off, is made at this point, not at full draw. Consciously getting to hold, then allow  the time to focus through the aperture to the point you are aiming at (and if windy, that point may be a little left, right, above, below). For barebow shooters-although there is no focus through the aperture-the training is the same.

A common break in eye focus is watching the arrow in flight-a quick turn of the head results in a change of eye focus right at the last second, changing the aiming point. Eyes should remain on the target at the chosen aiming point –“laser pointed”; head remains steady, fingers are released by the last rotation of the scapula to the spine.

Take a look at Brady Ellison and how his eye focus remains at the target after the release of the arrow.

Archery Class Training Details: SCORE
BASICS:
Outside DISTANCES
are determined by rank student is working for.
15 meters is shortest rank earning distance using 122 cm faces for JOAD youth  (ages 9-20 yrs)
30 Meters is shortest rank earning distance for SOAD adult (ages 18 and up) .
Indoor distances are either 9 or 18 meters, with either a 60 or 40 cm face.

New students, adult or youth, may be assigned larger and closer distances as this class is designed to offer the fundamentals of scoring, while providing continued training to enable students to progress to further distances.

Each month, on the third weekend we score.
New students begin to learn how to play the game of archery!
Learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points, and learn how to keep score.
If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at a Tournament event more comfortable .
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday and 3:30 on Sunday,  Arrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be geared up and on the line at 10:30 (or 3:30 Sunday) at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows each end which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Earning pins? must be a USA Archery Youth, Adult or Family member & Learn Archery JOAD or SOAD member- print USA Archery membership card
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows each end. ( student may not finish in time allotted if using only 3 arrows).
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot 3 arrows per end (will not end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.) Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD and using program arrows ,will use 3 arrows each end for time considerations for those earning rank , and may not end with a completed card.

Class may run longer during scoring sessions.

 per USA Archery.
As we are a USA Archery JOAD & SOAD club, any student participating in class needs minimum USA Archery “RECREATIONAL” membership ($15)
(Note: Although you can not earn rank at Recreational membership level when scoring, you can upgrade during your membership year if desired).).

Oct 11 & 12 Training "in the Process"
Training in archery focuses on form, and the "process". We always say "focus on the process".

The best way to focus on the process and create a  routine is to write it down, and note your specific variations for your routine. (example: I must always close my left eye, and turn my draw arm elbow out, and I put those elements into an auto-pilot sequence). As you add in new skills, old ones become sub-conscious elements. It is crucial that you add-in a specific element, work on mastering it, then add another. If you build on top of elements that don’t support your goals, you will be building sub-conscious elements that will be difficult to unlearn. Consistency is about repeatability.

Each step in your routine should take the same amount of time, each and every time, to get the best accuracy.  The entire shooting process should take about 10 seconds, with about 3 seconds to aim. Variations on that, results in variations at the target.

Be willing to expand and add new techniques Yes, we all step up, shoot, and repeat, but have something specific to work on. We discussed this at our last training.

Typical steps useful as an outline in various styles- compound, recurve, bare-bow. (note: aim is far down the list!) Add your personal variations!
1.Stance & posture
2.Nock
3.Set : hook string & place bow-hand
4.Set-up
5.Draw/load
6.Anchor
7. Load & transfer then hold
8.Aim & expand
9.Release
10.Follow Through

See you on the range!

Oct 4th & 5th: Quadrant training, indoor equipment options

Saturday:10:30 a.m. -11:30 am (please arrive before 10:15)

outside Saturday weather predicted to be beautiful Saturday-check for our targets outside .
Class ends at 11:30  as Orientation follows

Sunday; may be inside-as hunting season archers may use the outdoor range
3:30 pm -4:30 pm

(please arrive before 3:15)
Store closes at 5.  start at 3:30

We had a great time with the games last weekend-and had quite a variety of winners at different distances and different games! Great way to relax, have some fun, and be ready for the movement into indoor tournament training.

2 tournaments are coming up: registration links to followNov 16: JOAD only,
KAC tournament at Jim Miller Park in Marietta 25 meters on a 60 cm face for all
Dec 6th: GAA 25 meter indoor shoot, Conyers, 18 meter

Now is the time to shift gear over to indoor equipment. We will review some options.

ARROWS: moving to indoor arrows-what gives the advantage?

Training: Arrow Patterns, Quadrant trainingAfter warming up with a few rounds to get sighted in, we will work on specific training with "blue tape" and “bare shaft”

Where are your arrows landing? What quadrant? We will section targets off with the tape and as you shoot , rather than focus on the Gold, focus on process, and you will see the pattern and how they reveal what to adjust in equipment or form. I will have sheets for you to record patterns over various ends.

Numbering arrows, shooting them in order
This process gives indications as to arrow errors, or form errors, and shows up in the patterns. It's easier with your own set of arrows because you begin to notice groups forming within the dozen arrows you shoot, but still very effective with the program arrows. Shooting 1,2,3,4,5,6 then 6,5,4,3,2,1...if 6 is always out no matter which sequence you shoot, it is not you. Arrow nocks can be off just a hair and cause variations.
