TRAINING:"Tighten Up"
Saturday & Sunday May 31 & June 1, 2014 Canton GA range :

Saturday: Please arrive early to gear up & check in ( no later than 10:15 ). Note:Orientation follows class
Sunday: Please arrive  early  to gear up and check in.(no later than 3:15)  Store closes at 5, and we must be packed up and out!

JOAD State tournament will be held June 28 http://www.gaarchery.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/2014_JOAD_Outdoor_Reg_Form.pdf , and training focus needs to be on tightening up form, and determining, and putting into place any equipment needed for the event.
This week the training will focus on using the strength from back muscles, steady, long, solid arm positions, with techniques to feel those muscles better so we can “engage” them, and reviewing basic steps.

Training Tip:
How do you combat the "first target in a competition" nerves, or hopefully later into the match the :"I just might win this tournament, and this shot really matters!" anxiousness?
The sight moves, your heart races, breathing may be erratic. How do you practice for this experience?
Tip from Coach Terry Wunderle: "Try running for a while to raise your pulse rate. Then pick up your bow and pretend the target you are shooting at is the first one of an important competition".

Consciously, purposely, switch your thinking back to excellent form, learning to mentally trust your form and make a strong shot. Yawn for a de-stressor.

first scoring arrow is at 10:30
Note:Orientation follows

Sunday: Please arrive  early  to gear up and check in.(no later than 3:15)
First scoring arrow is at 3:30.
Store closes at 5, and we must be packed up and out! Outdoor scoring takes longer as we shoot 36 arrows.

Archery Class Training: SCORE
At the Canton range
Outside DISTANCES ARE determined by rank student is working for.
15 meters is shortest rank earning distance using 122 cm faces for JOAD youth  (ages 9-20 yrs) . .
30 Meters is shortest rank earning distance using 80 cm face for SOAD adult (ages 18 and up) .
Indoor distances are either 9 or 18 meters, with either a 60 or 40 cm face.

Each month, on the third weekend we score.
New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer.
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • Earning pins: must be a USA Archery Youth, Adult or Family member & Learn Archery member- print USA Archery membership card
  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday and 3:30 on SundayArrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be geared up and on the line at 10:30 (or 3:30 Sunday) at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows, however may not finish in time allotted.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD using program arrows will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank , and will not end with a completed card.
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not  end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.)

Class may run longer during scoring sessions if earning rank/pins.
Students need to pre-fill  scorecards upon arrival.

Effective January 1 , 2014.
Any student participating in class needs minimum USA Archery “RECREATIONAL” membership ($15)

(Note: You can not earn rank at Recreational membership level when scoring, but can upgrade during your membership year if desired).

SUMMER CAMP now online for registration:

http://www.learnarchery.com/ArcherySummerCamp2014.html

Training: Breathing, Timing
Breathing should be as consistent as the other elements of your "process". Timing is a big part of the steps you are going through. If you take a deep breath and hold it, then pull back the bow string, you will find that you are "up in your chest" and loose the flat back and center core stability. The sight will jump and beat with your heart, making aiming challenging, and you may release the string prematurely because you simply can't hold your breath anymore. Breathing should be timed to bring air in as you "open" the bow, and slowly let about half of it out as
you come to rest at full draw anchor. A deep diaphragmatic settling breath should be taken and exhaled prior to raising the bow.

  1. While raising the bow, inhale deeply and naturally, using diaphragmatic breathing , which will create a natural feeling of gaining strength.
  2. Approximately 30-50% of the breath must be let out slowly and naturally when coming to full draw, but before anchoring, and then held from this point for the few seconds of aiming with an inflated/tightened abdomen till after the release and released during the follow-through.
Additionally, we will be timing the shots at each end. As we will be inside, we will time 2 minutes for 3 arrows.

Any student participating in class needs minimum USA Archery “RECREATIONAL” membership ($15)

To earn rank/pins, student must hold a full "youth" or "adult" , or "family" membership, + JOAD Club membership rather than recreational

Summer camp scheduling!

In the outdoor season of archery, several tournaments are coming up. Some are “900 rounds” and some are “FITA rounds”.
There is a 900 round on Saturday at Conyers at 7 pm: Night the Lights came on in Georgia  Registration

Whats a 900 round?
What’s a FITA round?

The 5 color (gold,red,blue,black,white) target is used for both and is scored 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.

For our program Sunday , seasoned archers with "red and better” at the furthest distance in their division, (noted below) or if using  their own arrows, may participate in a short version of a 900 round. We will be shooting a total of 36 arrows at 3 distances: 2 rounds of 6 arrows(total of 12) at each distance. We will be shooting YARDs not meters.

A 900 round is a common, short, 1 day tournament.
Fundamentals of a "900" round.
A  900 round distance is set in either meters or yards, so double check entry specifications when registering and for practicing.
The basics: 3 distances, based on age, shot at a122cm face for all. Typically 5 ends of 6 arrows each distance, total 90 arrows, so a perfect score is 900.

Typical set up ( May 3rd Conyers tournament will be in meters)
Yeoman to the end of the 10th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
BOWMAN To the end of the year of 12th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
CUB To the end of the year of 14th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
NOVICE (Genesis bow) To the end of the 18th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
CADET To the end of the year of 16th Birthday 60-50-40 yards
JUNIOR To the end of the year of 18th Birthday 60-50-40 yards
ADULT Beginning the year of 19th Birthday 60-50-40 yards
BAREBOW Beginning the year of 19th Birthday 50-40-30 yards
TRADITIONAL Beginning the year of 19th Birthday 50-40-30 yards

FITA outdoor Round.
A FITA round in the sport of archery, is a form of target shooting competition used in international and world championship events, authorized by the Federation International de Tire a l’Arc (FITA) now known as World Archery Federation (WA ), the international governing body of archery.
The 2 day event consists of 144 arrows, shot at 4 distances with 36 arrows at each distance and 1440 is a perfect score. In recurve, the distances for adult men are 90,70, 50,and 30 meters , and 70,60,50,30 meters for adult women. The two longer distances are shot on one day with a 122 cm face, and shorter distances shot a second day with an 80cm face. Check registration info for variations for different divisions, or, distance variations including compound. See tournament registrations for specifics.
Also a FITA Round-of 72 arrows shot one day at one set distance, based on division and equipment-is in the upcoming Georgia Cup on May 24th and 25th. Registration

We will also review "basal area of support", a biomechanical term relating to foot position.
