Archery Class Training: SCORE
At the Canton range
Outside DISTANCES ARE determined by rank student is working for.
15 meters is shortest rank earning distance using 122 cm faces for JOAD youth  (ages 9-20 yrs) . .
30 Meters is shortest rank earning distance using 80 cm face for SOAD adult (ages 18 and up) .

Each month, on the third weekend we score. ( moved to 4th weekend in April  due to Easter break)New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers learn how to keep score, and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/SOAD program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer.
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.

Scoring Class Basics:

  • Earning pins: must be a USA Archery Youth, Adult or Family member & Learn Archery member- print USA Archery membership card
  • Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .
  • First scoring arrow begins at 10:30 Saturday and 3:30 on SundayArrive early if you need to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 (or 36 arrows if outdoors) students must be geared up and on the line at 10:30 (or 3:30 Sunday) at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Focus for completing score cards will be on JOAD or SOAD members earning rank
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows, however may not finish in time allotted.
  • Adults not scoring at their appropriate distances with correct size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD using program arrows will only use 3 arrows for time considerations for those earning rank , and will not end with a completed card.
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot only 3 arrows ( will not  end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.)

Class may run longer during scoring sessions if earning rank/pins.
Students need to pre-fill  scorecards upon arrival.

April 13 & 14: Archery Class Training: "Sit dog", wrist snap

Saturday & Sunday April 12 & 13TH , 2014 Canton GA range
Arrive early to check in and gear up
Saturday :10:30 OUTSIDE-  BEAUTIFUL WEATHER PREDICTED-

PARENTS!! Please be sure to inform your students!!

At the Canton range

This weeks Training: "sit dog!!"

Bring a shoelace-wide , long (can be colorful or with a pattern if you like) to learn to make your own bow slings, sized to fit your hand.
You Tube video of how to make a sling:
http://www.learnarchery.com/ArcheryEquipmentSelection.html

We started basic training with “halt dog” to get the proper “v” in our bow hand position. Depending on the type of bow and style you shoot, gripping of the bow and dropping the bow arm creates errors at the last moment of the shot, and the idea is to shoot the bow and arrow at the same time…so the hand holding the bow must be relaxed, but purposeful ,so the sling can do its job as the bow seemingly “jumps” from the hand toward the target and rotates as the sling catches it.
From the wrist: “sit dog!” a snap at the wrist, with the sling doing the work to catch the bow. Bow arm stays STEADY.

 .
(courtesy KSL International, SPT's)

Only the wrist snaps downward, with slight tension in the open thumb of the bow hand...bow arm stays steady-does NOT drop.

Saturday & Sunday April 5, & 6th, 2014 Canton GA range
Arrive early to check in and gear up
Saturday :10:30 OUTSIDE-
BEAUTIFUL WEATHER PREDICTED-
Sunday:  3:30 INSIDE

Archery Class Training: Bring "your plan" to class
PARENTS!! Please be sure to inform your students!!

At the Canton range
We have been going over the basics, and stressing the "process" and elements of form for quite some time. We have a "focus" for training each week.
This week, we need students to write down what they plan to work on for this class. This is a mental preparation. I'd like you to think through your sequence, figure your weakest  piece , or something you really feel you want to improve on.
I need specifics-not "shoot better",  but "hold my bow-arm steady", or "snap my wrist to sit dog when I release", or "follow through to behind my ear by using good back tension", or "my hips will stay motionless as I go through my process", or "my finger position on the string has the proper tension and my wrist has the crook in it for proper set", or...give me a SPECIFIC goal you are reaching for, and let us help you find a way to meet it.

Any student participating in class needs minimum USA Archery “RECREATIONAL” membership ($15)

To earn rank/pins, student must hold a full "youth" or "adult" , or "family" membership, rather than recreational + Learn Archery JOAD Club membership
