We will play a few rounds of “ Knock Out” with variations to warm up, and then focus on training routines, and how to implement them to improve your results.
Training: Steps.
Training in archery focuses on form. Each step in your routine should take the same amount of time, each and every time, to get the best accuracy. Consistency is about repeatability. The entire shooting process should take about 10 seconds, with about 3 seconds to aim. Variations on that, results in variations at the target.

Even though some days you may just feel like slingin’ arrows- train by focusing on one specific element. (examples: hand position in the grip; fingers positioned on the string; breathing; head position does not move; string touches nose, etc,..something form related, and specific.) . Yes, we all step up, shoot, and repeat, but, to improve, have something specific to work on.

The best way to settle into a routine is to write it down, and note your specific variations for your routine. (example: I must always close my left eye, and turn my draw arm elbow out, and I put those elements into an auto-pilot sequence). As you add in new skills, old ones become sub-conscious elements. It is crucial that you add-in a specific element, work on mastering it, then add another .Be willing to expand and add new techniques. If you build on top of elements that don’t support your goals, you will be building sub-conscious elements that will be difficult to unlearn.

Form evidence in outdoors at long distances, stamina in tournament during long sets
Poor form shows up as we move to longer distances, and really shows up during a long set of shooting. Timing will begin to become consistent as your elements build, and endurance will be a natural by-product of proper form, frequent, scheduled practice and SPT’s.

Typical steps useful as an outline in various styles- compound, recurve, barebow. (note: aim is far down the list!)
1.Stance & posture
2.Nock
3.Set : hook string & place bowhand
4.Mindset
5.Set-up
6.Draw/load
7.Anchor
8. Load & transfer to hold
9.Aim & expand
10.Release
11.Follow Through
12. Relaxation and feedback

SCORE!!!

Over the last few weeks we have been focusing on training that tunes up technique. When an archer concentrates on score, or outcome, they give themselves a disadvantage. Keeping the mind on the process, each step...each piece...one after another, gives the most composure, and best results.
Each month, on the third weekend we score.
New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers keep score and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the JOAD/SOAD program, they can turn in cards to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer.

Those entering the State JOAD or State tourney, or the JOAD Nationals and Nationals coming up in the next weeks can score on the size faces based on your entry divisions. JOAD earning rank may score on the 60 cm face.
We will score as we have in the past, shooting indoor rounds - 30 arrows ( 10 ends -3 arrows each), and all must be on the appropriate target face at your distance.
We will use the scorecards you are familiar with, and students will score in an official manner, with two archers scoring and checking together.

4 tournament opportunities coming up.
Participation in any of these is a great experience.

Cupids Arrow

Last week we focused on training patterns, numbering our arrows and mapping the arrows on the targets to identify how we need to tune up our form and techniques. Several tournaments are coming up this month, and training focus needs to be on tightening up ,and not making any big changes in either equipment or form just before a competition.
This week we will have some fun, and check our steady precision. If you are attending the tournament, and wish to use a target face and practice, we will make that available.
As Valentines day is right around the corner (coming up on Thursday!), we will have some fun with our training. Our targets will include hearts, and the training will focus on using the strength from back muscles, steady, long, solid arm positions, with techniques to feel those muscles better so we can “engage” them.
Where the hearts intersect, will be the high score region.

Feb 2, 2013 Training: Basics

Patterns Quadrant taining:
After warming up with a few rounds to get sighted in, we will work on specific training with "blue tape".
Where are your arrows landing? What quadrant? We will section targets off with the tape, and as you shoot , focus on process, and you will see the patterns of arrows and how they reveal what to adjust in equipment or form. I will have sheets for you to record patterns over a few ends.
Eqpt Training Tip:
Numbering arrows, shooting them in order. Use of this process gives indications as to arrow errors, or form errors, and shows up in the patterns. Easier with your own set of arrows because you begin to notice groups forming within the dozen arrows you shoot, but very effective with the program arrows. Shooting 1,2,3,4,5,6 then 6,5,4,3,2,1...if 6 is always out no matter which sequence you shoot, it is not you. Arrow nocks can be off just a hair and cause variations. If the last arrow shot is always out-you may be showing fatigue.
