 Balloon Shoot &" Knock-out" games!

Last week members of the JOAD and SOAD programs scored and earned rank and pins, and awards will be presented this class.

This week, we will have the balloon shoot game along with the "knock-out" game. Everyone, please stretch out, get your gear set up and select 1 balloon to blow up and put in the big bag with your symbol or initial.
We will have a few warm up rounds of knock-out and start the games.

Knock-Out:

Strategy and skill as a warm up game... 3 arrows.

First round: red and better scored arrows are kept to shoot for the next round.

Next round "8" and better scored arrows are kept (arrows are getting down to one or two in a quiver ,and usually only one or two competitors are still standing.)

Down to Gold!!!(with what's left in your quiver)
(those Knocked-out, may begin practice for the balloon games, or scoring)

Balloon Shoot:
The idea is shoot YOUR balloon first, before your competitor pops theirs.
Once you have shot yours,  you shoot for theirs.
(If you shoot theirs first accidentally-they win and they move to the next round . You are out a round,  but can restart shooting with others independent of the 1st game,  to create an underlying game.)

Strategy is important. Timing is important. This is a training game for handling nerves, and gaining focus.
Use the skills we've trained for in these games!!

Please arrive a few minutes early to gear up and check in.

To participate , Please reply with the day and time selected in the subject line. and your name, right or left handed, and if adult or youth via learnarchery@yahoo.com if you have not already done so, so we have enough equipment and staff available

Please arrive a few minutes early to gear up, and sign in. Begin to know your distances and target face size by putting them on the appropriate target. This one hour class allows students to gear up & continue with training basics in safety and form .Coach supervised training includes recurve bow and all safety equipment. Continuing, ongoing instruction , accommodating various skill levels, covering: refining form, understanding equipment needs, equipment purchasing options, tournament rules, timing, string alignment, concentration, back tension.

Class fee for open sessions as posted at the Canton location is $15.00, check or cash

Put your sight on the bow to learn where it is set based on the distance you shoot, and check the left/ right position of the aperture.
Wear snug fitting, layered clothing,
( must have closed toe shoes for out doors or can not shoot), tie loose hair back, and remove jewelry that may interfere with string release (usually bracelets, necklaces).

See you on the range!

April 20, 21, 2013 -Score!

April 20, 21, 2013
At the Canton range
Score!

Third weekend of each month.

Check around back if the weather is good to see if targets are set up for outdoor rounds. Be sure to bring chairs to sit in!

Saturday: 10:30 a.m. indoors(we arrive at 10 to set up)

Sunday,  3:30-- weather permitting-we will be at the back outdoor range

NO Wednesday  Classes (suspended until further notice).

Each month, on the third weekend we score.
Over the last few weeks we have been focusing on training that tunes up technique. When an archer concentrates on score, or outcome, they give themselves a disadvantage. Keeping the mind on the process, each step...each piece...one after another, gives the most composure, and best results.

New students begin to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, and what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points . New archers keep score and may keep the scorecards to have a log of their own progress. If students are a member of the JOAD/SOAD program, they can turn in cards to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at an event more comfortable and into a no-brainer.

April 13, 14At the Canton range
Saturday: 10:30 a.m. indoors(we arrive at 10 to set up)
Sunday, 3:30--we will be outdoors at the back range.

Wednesday, Classes suspended until further notice.

We are now in the outdoor season of archery and several tournaments are coming up. Some are “900 rounds” and some are “FITA rounds”.
What's a 900 round?
What’s a FITA round?

The 5 color (gold,red,blue,black,white) target is used and is scored 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.

For our program Sunday , seasoned archers with "red and better” at the furthest distance in their division, or if using their own arrows, may participate in a short version of a 900 round on Sunday . We will be shooting a total of 30 arrows at 3 distances: 3 rounds of 3 arrows(total of 9) at each distance, and review "basal area of support", a biomechanical term relating to foot position.
A 900 round is a common, short, 1 day tournament.
Fundamentals of a "900" round.
A 900 round distance is set in either meters or yards, so double check entry specifications when registering and for practicing.
The basics: 3 distances, based on age, shot at a122cm face for all. Typically 5 ends of 6 arrows each distance, total 90 arrows, so a perfect score is 900.
Typical set up(and used for the April 13 tournament: note: GAA registration shows meters, but also notes it will be yards)
Yeoman to the end of the 10th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
BOWMAN To the end of the year of 12th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
CUB To the end of the year of 14th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
NOVICE (Genesis bow) To the end of the 18th Birthday 40-30-20 yards
CADET To the end of the year of 16th Birthday 60-50-40 yards
JUNIOR To the end of the year of 18th Birthday 60-50-40 yards
ADULT Beginning the year of 19th Birthday 60-50-40 yards
BAREBOW Beginning the year of 19th Birthday 50-40-30 yards
TRADITIONAL Beginning the year of 19th Birthday 50-40-30 yards

FITA outdoor Round.
A FITA round in the sport of archery, is a form of target shooting competition used in international and world championship events, authorized by the Federation International de Tire a l’Arc (FITA) now known as World Archery Federation (WA ), the international governing body of archery.
The 2 day event consists of 144 arrows, shot at 4 distances with 36 arrows at each distance and 1440 is a perfect score. In recurve, the distances for adult men are 90,70, 50,and 30 meters , and 70,60,50,30 meters for adult women. The two longer distances are shot on one day with a 122 cm face, and shorter distances shot a second day with an 80cm face. Check registration info for variations for different divisions, or, distance variations including compound. See tournament registrations for specifics.

Please arrive a few minutes early to gear up and check in.

Form Basics with stretch band and string bands: April 6 & 7

At the Canton Indoor range
Saturday: 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. indoors(we arrive at 10 to set up)

Sunday, 3:30 p.m. Looks like great weather-OUTDOORS

NO WEDNESDAY CLASSES

Wednesday classes are suspended
We will not offer Wednesday classes this month. We will send an announcement and post on the web if the Wednesday sessions resume.

Form Basics with stretch band and string bands: April 6 & 7
How to practice when you are away from the range? What if you don’t have equipment?
We have addressed having a written plan for execution of your shooting routine, but what is the process for developing the routine, and building on those essential steps? I have shared many times that the Koreans are world champion shooters, and the basis for much of the training in the world is patterned after their bio-mechanical training.
Korean athletes start training with NO equipment , only stretch or string bands.
Mirror work:
When practicing at home, get your notebook with your steps, and begin with "stance", make a mental note of how your feet should be placed on the line and under your shoulders-are they at the same angle? Feet parallel? and continue from there.
Stand in front of the mirror, look at your form and how your feet are positioned, etc and follow each of the notes . This is easiest done with stretch bands or string bands. If you have your stretch bands- look in the mirror and practice form and release. If you don't have a training band yet, you can still stand in front of a mirror and place a piece of tape on the mirror as a target point to laser point your eyes to, and go through your shooting sequence.

You can make a string band from a luggage tape or thin rope set for your personal length so you have a "stop" when you pull back on the loop and anchor under your chin.
If you have your own equipment, you can do the same training , except for actual string release part, but hold anchored under your chin. Time it, as long as you can hold in correct form.
Rest for twice the time you held.
Repeat.
This training builds strength and ability to hold steadily those few (3) seconds you are aiming. But for 144 arrow tournament, the payoff is huge!

We will train with stretch bands at the beginning of the session, then shoot.
See you on the range!
